Tuscany Architect

There are two regional forms of the Italian Romanesque architecture: Tuscan and southern. The cathedral of Pisa, completed in 1118 with its campanile, displays the Tuscan characteristics, the decorative use of tier upon tier of columns. Tuscan architects of that time also made a specialty of using variegated marbles and followed the antique style closely.

Some elements of that create the look of a Tuscany home are:

  • a tile roof
  • vine covered walls
  • crooked and crumbling stone walls, outlining walkways and patios
  • garden paving is either brick or stone set

Interior of Tuscany Style Homes

Rooms: The rooms are beautifully proportioned on classical lines. Ceiling height, the size and scale of fireplace, windows and doors play an important role in creating balance and harmony within the room.

Walls: The wall treatments of the Tuscany home act as support for the rest of the interior. Plaster walls evoke the classic Italian feeling, while hand painted wall treatments and decorative patterns enhanced common spaces. Use of tapestries and ornate detailing help define the interior, often bringing historical context and stylistic vigor to the home.

Ceilings: Ceilings are richly textured. Classic clouds, stenciled borders and vaulted or paneled ceilings create an architectural framework uniquely expressive of this style. Old wood beams can evoke a rustic look.

Floors: Terre-cotta tiles, glazed ceramic and marble are elements of the Tuscany designs. Umbers, rose pink, yellow and pure white marbles create a color palette. Pale travertine is often used in homes and stores. Terrazzo floors, made from marble chips, crushed stone and stucco, are polished to a smooth. Mosaic work, often of glass, stone or tile adds flare and energy.
