620,154 people between the ages of 18 and 34, by 2000 the number had risen to
701,696 and the estimated projection for 2005 is 802,348. As a comparison, the
projected population of citizens over the age of 75 is only 191,856.

So what is it about Phoenix that draws so many young people? The low
unemployment rate may be a factor with only 2.8% of the population seeking
employment. The developing industries may also be a draw with high technology
rising to the forefront followed by attractive fields such as electric and
electronic equipment, food processing, semiconductors, information processing,
printing, fabricated metals, communications, business services, wholesale and
retail trade and the obvious real estate and tourism.

Of course there is more to life than just work and the young still know how to
play. The Phoenix area is awash is recreational activities from the traditional
hiking trails and golf courses or mountain biking and hot air ballooning for
the more adventurous. At night there are plenty of hot spots for club crazy
hipsters and a thriving cultural scene. Phoenix is growing by leaps and bounds
and getting younger in the process.
